Hockey to host 2009 Women's Junior World Cup in Boston
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Nov. 14, 2007) – The
birthplace of field hockey in the United States will serve as a showcase for
the sport’s newest wave of international talent following the International
Hockey Federation’s (FIH) announcement that USA Field Hockey and the city of
Boston will host the 2009 BDO Women’s Junior World Cup.
Scheduled for Aug. 4-16, 2009, the 16-team Junior World Cup
will be held at Harvard University in nearby Cambridge, Mass. where,
according to lore, English physical education teacher Constance Applebee
first introduced the game of field hockey to the United States in 1901.
“USA Field
Hockey is proud and honored to be selected as the host for the 2009 BDO
Women’s Junior World Cup,” said USA Field Hockey Board Chair Pam Hixon.
“This prestigious event provides an opportunity to showcase the best junior
hockey players from around the world, and give our juniors here in the
United States a peak into the amazing future that field hockey may hold for
them.

“We are very
excited to have the great city of Boston as the home for this event, with
the institutions of Harvard University, Boston College and Boston University
providing top-level facilities and fantastic experiences for our world class
athlete guests.”
In addition to Harvard’s Jordan Field venue, the event will
utilize the other Boston area universities as training facilities.
“We’re pleased
that USA Field Hockey proposed that this important international event be
held in Boston & Cambridge, as field hockey made its first U.S. appearance
at Harvard University.,” said Patrick Moscaritolo, President & C.E.O. of the
Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau. “The selection of our
destination to serve as host to the 2009 BDO Women’s Junior World Cup
continues to put us on the map for international sporting events. We look
forward to showing the athletes and guests from around the world all that
Boston & Cambridge has to offer.”
Held every four years, the Junior World Cup represents the
top international event for athletes under the age of 21. Now in its 6th
edition, the Women’s Junior World Cup debuted in Ottawa, Canada in 1989,
with the most recent event was held in Santiago, Chile in 2005. The USA
Junior Women earned a best-ever 7th
place finish in 2005 while Korea is the defending Junior World Cup champion.
The current USA National Squad features nine athletes who played in the
Junior World Cup including April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa.), Dina Rizzo
(Walpole, Mass.) and Amy Tran (Grantville, Pa.) from the 2001 U.S. Junior
World Cup team and Lauren Crandall (Doyelstown, Pa.), Rachel Dawson (Berlin,
N.J.), Katelyn Falgowski (Landenberg, Pa.), Michelle Kasold (Chapel Hill,
N.C.), Katie O’Donnell (Blue Bell, Pa.) and Lauren Powley (Mountaintop,
Pa.) from the 2007 Junior World Cup team.
The awarding of the Women’s Junior World Cup to Boston
continues USA Field Hockey’s initiative to host major world events after
successfully hosting the 2006 March on Madrid in College Park, Md. and
Virginia Beach and the Rabobank Champions Challenge in Virginia Beach in
2005.
